What is the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) / Commuter Benefits option?
These options help you manage out-of-pocket health care costs for health care, work-related dependent care, and/or commuter costs lower your federal taxable income by setting aside dollars before they are taxed. Our plan administrator is HealthEquity (formerly known as WageWorks).
With these plans, you can cover the cost of eligible out-of-pocket health care, dependent care, and/or commuter costs with “before-tax” dollars – almost like an automatic “tax deduction”. The dollar amount you choose will be transferred from each paycheck, before taxes are deducted, and contributed to your account(s). Then, use your FSA debit card to pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses or submit a claim for reimbursement. (Note: Medical and Dependent Care Spending Accounts are not exempt from state taxes.)
How much can I transfer to my FSA account(s)?
Each year, you choose an amount to be transferred to your account from your paycheck. It is recommended that you base your designated amount(s) on predictable expenses. The amount you choose will be transferred in equal installments from each paycheck throughout the year. For the 2025 plan year, the maximum contribution amounts are as follows:
2025 Health FSA maximum = $3,300
Dependent Care FSA maximums:
** $5,000 for a married couple filing jointly
** $5,000 for a single parent
** $2,500 for a married person filing separately
Note: For plan year 2025, you can rollover up to $660 of unused funds into the next plan year. Any amount over $570 remaining in your account at the end of the plan year is forfeited. Here's an example:
For example, Jane Doe elects the maximum Health FSA election amount of $3,300 for deduction from her salary. By the end of the plan year, she has used only $2,300 of her Health FSA funds, leaving $1,000 in her account. $660 rolls over into the next plan year and she forfeits $340. For the new plan year, she again elects the maximum amount, so her total available Health FSA funds will be $3,960 ($3,300 + $660).
How much can I transfer to my Commuter Benefits account?
The amount you choose will be transferred in equal installments from each paycheck throughout the year. For the current plan year, the maximum contribution amounts for your Commuter Benefits account are as follows:
**Qualified parking: $325 maximum per month*
**Qualified vanpooling/transit passes: $325 maximum per month combined
What out-of-pocket medical expenses are eligible for reimbursement?
Current maximums for commuter benefits are as follows:
Out-of-pocket health care expenses that are eligible for reimbursement from your FSA include costs for the below and more:
* Prescribed acne treatments
* Copayments
* Contact lenses and cleaners
* Dental care
* Eyeglasses
* Hearing aids/batteries
* Lasik eye surgery
* Prescribed smoking cessation programs
Eligible expenses for Dependent Care FSAs include expenses for care that allows the employee and spouse to be gainfully employed, such as a babysitter, daycare or daycamps, and after-school programs.
What is an FSA debit card?
All FSA participants are issued their own debit card to pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses – use it to pay your copays and other expenses on-the-spot. The amount of your out-of-pocket expenses are automatically deducted from your FSA -– no receipts or claim forms needed.
