Save with Generic
Drugs
Branchburg Township School District
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), generic drugs are as safe and
effective as the brand-name drug, and are a way to take control of your
health care costs.
To take advantage of your plan's lower generic copay
instead of the higher brand-name copay, ask your physician to prescribe a
generic drug or write a prescription that allows substitution of a generic
drug whenever possible.

More About Generics
When patents on brand-name drugs expire, competing
manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell
equivalent, generic versions. Once approved, these manufacturers can launch
these new generic drugs for sale to consumers. Approved by the FDA,
generic drugs are as safe and effective as the brand-name drug, and are a
way to take control of your health care costs.
In certain instances, you have a choice between brand-name
and generic drugs. In New Jersey, if a physician indicates "substitution
permissible" or gives no indication at all on the prescription, the
pharmacist must substitute a generic drug. However, you or your physician
can otherwise advise that substitution is not permissible.
Visit the FDA website or BeneCard/RxAlliance for more information about
generic drugs.
