Dependent Coverage
The Affordable Care Act allows for medical and prescription drug coverage for eligible child dependents (regardless of marital, student, or financial dependency status, residence, or eligibility for health benefits through an employer) until the last day of the year in which he/she reaches age 26.

Dental coverage for dependents ends at the end of the month in which he/she turns age 19; if your dependent is a full-time student at an accredited school, college, or university, coverage ends at the end of the calendar month in which he/she turns age 23.

When your child is about to age out of the medical, prescription, or dental plans, it is important that you notify our Benefits Coordinator at (732) 297-7800 x3122 / benefits@sbschools.org to learn about continuing coverage options such as COBRA or the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace.

Newborn children are automatically covered for 60 days from date of birth. To continue coverage beyond the initial 60 days, you must actively enroll your child in the District plan using the bswift online portal.

Waiting Period for New Hires
New employees with a start date of July 1 (12-month) or September 1 (10-month) are eligible for health benefits immediately; no waiting period applies. New employees with start dates other than July 1 or September 1 are subject to a waiting period of 30 days (e.g., for a start date of September 15, coverage is typically effective October 15). Other scenarios may apply.

Employees who do not provide enrollment forms with required backup documents within 30 days of hire must wait until the next Open Enrollment period to join the District plans.

Life Events and Benefit Changes
Qualifying life events (such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, adoption, or loss of other coverage) typically allow you to adjust your benefit elections. Note: to be eligible for any special enrollment opportunity, you must request the change within 31 days (60 days for the birth of a child) of the qualifying event. It is important to adjust your plans immediately at the bswift online portal when such an event occurs.
